Star critics cherry-pick some of the best on offer in the weeks to come

EDINBURGH COMEDY

Elvis McGonagall’s Countrybile

Stand in the Square, York Place

Until August 31

Elvis McGonagall is a performance poet of considerable talent who observes the political pronouncements of the Establishment with wit and incisiveness. His new show takes aim at this sceptic isle of robber barons and foodbanks and takes a swipe too at the Kirstie Allsopps of this world. For the latter reason alone, this has to be a must-see.edfringe.com

LEEDS EXHIBITION

Paul Neagu: Palpable Sculpture

Henry Moore Institute

The Headrow

Until November 8

Romania-born artist Paul Neagu (1938-2004) demanded that sculpture be appreciated by all five senses and this exhibition includes Nine Catalytic Stations, a sculpture summarising his complex philosophical ideas. Also on show are tactile boxes and edible sculptures, performances and fictional collaborators, objects and drawings. In his work Neagu created systems of thought based on his understanding of the human body as a simple container, with his exhibitions conceived as dialogues and experiments.henry-moore.org

LONDON JAZZ

Gilad Atzmon with Strings: The Music of Charlie Parker

Ronnie Scott’s Frith Street, W1

September 21-22

Gilad Atzmon performs the music of arguably the greatest alto sax player in jazz history, Charlie Parker in this show. Accompanied by a full string section adding depth to Bird’s classic compositions, the show’s been earning rave reviews around the country — “Atzmon’s marvellous evocation of Charlie Parker’s legendary 1949 Verve recording with strings somehow succeeds in conveying Bird’s mercurial genius, as well as accurately representing what counts as some of the most profoundly beautiful music ever made,” is but one example of the critical thumbs-up it’s been getting. ronniescotts.co.uk

LONDON MUSICAL

The Etienne Sisters

Theatre Royal

Gerry Raffles Square, E15

September 10-October 3

The Etienne Sisters, written and directed by Che Walker and with songs by Anoushka Lucas and Sheila Atim, tells the story of a family with “all their cracks, secrets and baggage” and poses the question whether families should stick together through thick and thin as Tree, Ree and estranged half-sister Bo handle the challenges that life throws at them. Walker’s one of the most talented of the new blood in music theatre and this should be well worth checking out. The all-female cast includes Allyson Ava-Brown, Jennifer Saayeng and Nina Toussaint-White.stratfordeast.com
