Sport in Brief: 17/06/2014

TENNIS: British number two Dan Evans went out in the first round of the Aegon International yesterday at Eastbourne to German Tobias Kamke.

Evans, who has a wild card into Wimbledon which starts next Monday, was unable to make inroads on his opponent’s serve and went down 6-2 6-3.

Fifth seed Ivo Karlovic was also a first-round casualty, the giant Croatian losing 6-4 6-4 to France’s Jeremy Chardy.

FOOTBALL: Phil Neville has admitted working as a commentator is “harder than I thought” after hundreds of viewers complained about his on-air performance during the World Cup game between England and Italy.

Neville was criticised for his lack of emotion and “monotone” style during the game.

Neville said: “Co-commentary is harder than I thought it would be. I will get better. I’m glad I helped everybody sleep!”

FOOTBALL: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain trained alongside his England team-mates yesterday.

The 20-year-old midfielder missed the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Italy in Manaus on Saturday through injury.

Oxlade-Chamberlain strained a medial ligament in his right knee during England’s 2-2 friendly draw against Ecuador on June 4 but his rehabilitation from the problem sustained in Miami is going well.

FOOTBALL: Spain goalkeeper David de Gea has picked up a hip injury which could rule him out for up to 10 days.

With Spain heavily defeated 5-1 by Holland in their opening group game, many believe the Manchester United number one was due a start in place of Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas.

But the injury means Casillas is likely to remain in goal unless manager Vincent del Bosque decides to play Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
