MYANMAR opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is urging separatists not to sign a peace deal until after November elections, her party colleague said yesterday.
Talks between the military government and 15 ethnic insurgent groups over the last 18 months led to a draft peace deal which the separatist Karen National Union (KNU) is reportedly ready to sign.
But National League for Democracy (NLD) executive member Win Htein said Ms Suu Kyi advised Major Htoo Htoo Lay of the KNU on Saturday not to do so.
“Suu Kyi said ethnic groups will have to consider not signing the nationwide ceasefire agreement before the November 8 general election,” he said. “It has to be meaningful.”
Several ethnic parties are allied with the NLD against President Thein Sein’s ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, which may benefit from a peace deal before the election.
The ceasefire deal excludes Shan state’s Ta’ang National Liberation Army, the Kokang group and the Arakan Army, which are not among the 15 officially recognised rebel armies.
