STARS of hospital sitcom Green Wing scrubbed up yesterday to support the junior doctors’ strike.
On-screen medics Stephen Mangan, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Pippa Haywood, Tamsin Greig and Oliver Chris joined the picket outside Northwick Hospital in London where the show was filmed.
The cast of the Channel 4 hit, which ran from 2004-7, reunited in a show of solidarity with real NHS heroes sacrificing pay for the fourth time to take action against Jeremy Hunt.
Mr Mangan criticised the Tory Health Secretary for trying to “bully” doctors into accepting a new contract that would force them to work even longer hours.
“Green Wing was in many ways absolutely ridiculous but it’s nowhere near as ridiculous as the mess Jeremy Hunt and the Department of Health have made of these negotiations with the junior doctors,” he said.
“We’re here to support the doctors at the hospital where we filmed Green Wing and to urge the government to listen to the medical profession’s concerns.”
Oscar-winning actor Vanessa Redgrave also joined more than 100 junior doctors as they delivered a 100,000-name petition against the contract to the Department of Health.
Jolyon Rubinstein, writer and star of BBC political satire The Revolution Will Be Televised, was filming at the protest.
Stepping out of character to address the doctors, he called them “poorly paid angels” and “unappreciated saints.”
He said: “Jeremy Hunt says he loves the NHS. He loves it so much he wants to cut it up into little bits and give it to all his friends.”
