MORE than 140 civilians have been killed in Yemen in the past 10 days, bringing the civilian death toll in more than three months of violence to 1,670, the United Nations said yesterday.
Saudi air strikes have continued despite a UN-brokered truce between Houthi Shi’ite rebels and the internationally backed but exiled government and its allies.
Riyadh, which began bombing rebel forces in March, claims exemption from the truce because of what it says is a lack of Houthi commitment.
UN human-rights office spokesman Rupert Colville said in Geneva that at least 142 civilians had been killed in Yemen between July 3 and Monday and another 224 were injured.
That included 76 deaths and 38 injuries in Saudi air strikes on markets on July 6.
The latest numbers bring the total killed since March 26 to 1,670, while 3,829 civilians have been injured, said Mr Colville.
