Continental Cup Football: Victory not enough for Everton

Sunderland 0 Everton 2

by Michelle Jones

Despite the scoreline, Everton were knocked out of the Continental Cup yesterday due to results elsewhere.

A first half goal from Nikita Parris and a goal 15 minutes from time from Lauren Davies gave the away side the win but it wasn’t enough to see them through to the semi-finals.

The game got off to a frantic start, with both teams needing a win in order to stand any chance of progressing through to the next round.

It was the visitors who took the lead. Everton striker Parris was gifted far too much space to fire in from 25 yards.

Sunderland’s task became harder when Abbey Holmes was sent off on the stroke of half time.

Everton continued to press on and found the second when Davies found the top corner, also from 25 yards, but victory wasn’t enough for the Toffees.
