The Devil’s Eyes
Benjamin Myers
The sheep has stolen the devil’s eyes and teeth;
the cloven hooves it already owns. It stands
atop the millstone grit, guardian of the sky.
Watching water that passes by but once,
it gazes at men with indifference. Its form
is lost beneath fur tweaked and snagged
across the acre boundaries of wire that
map the greedy land-grab of progress.
It knows little, cares even less.
Benjamin Myers was born in Durham in 1976 and now lives in West Yorkshire. His novels include Beastings (2014), Pig Iron (2012), which won the Gordon Burn Award, and Richard (2010), a Sunday Times book of the year. He is also a recipient of a Northern Writers’ Award. His journalism has appeared in publications including The Guardian, New Statesman, Mojo, New Scientist, Caught By The River and others. This poem is taken from his newest collection, Heathcliff Adrift, which was commissioned by New Writing North for Durham Book Festival and is published by Tangerine Press.
