JEREMY CORBYN was handed another huge boost yesterday as Unison became the fourth union to back his Labour leadership campaign.
The Star reported last month how the union’s leadership had not wanted to make an official nomination.
But general secretary Dave Prentis said the left candidate’s message has “resonated with public-sector workers who have suffered years of pay freezes and redundancies.
“Their choice shows a clear need for change towards a fairer society where work is fairly rewarded, and where those living and working in poverty supported,” he added.
With 15,000 members signed up to vote in the Labour leadership contest, the endorsement takes Mr Corbyn closer to victory on September 12.
The decision of Britain’s biggest health union comes as a blow to Andy Burnham, who is Labour’s shadow health secretary.
Unison also recommended members to make Yvette Cooper their second preference, although Mr Prentis stressed voting was an individual decision.
Mr Corbyn said in response: “I have been a member of Unison and its predecessor union NUPE for many years and I am honoured to receive its nomination today.”
