Women's World Cup: ‘We have the weapons to hurt Norway’

ENGLAND will face Norway on Monday after successfully defeating Colombia 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Goals from Karen Carney and a Fara Williams penalty in the first half secured their passage to the quarter-finals, with victory leaving England second behind France only on goal difference.

Norway finished second in their group, joint on points with Germany, but manager Mark Sampson is confident his side have the tools to progress into the semis.

“Norway drew 1-1 with the best team in the tournament [Germany] but we are playing well and have weapons to potentially hurt them,” said Sampson.

“We are building a real sense of momentum emotionally and in our results and performances so we can play them confidently and look to be positive.

“Norway have shown they are a very good side and from now on anything but a good England performance won’t be good enough for us to get a result.

“We have to raise the bar because we are going to be challenged by some great teams.”

England have never progressed past the quarters.
