A MAN was killed trying to enter the Eurotunnel terminal in Calais, French police announced yesterday, the eighth such death since June.
The victim, believed to be a Sudanese national, was hit by a lorry as he tried to climb over a shuttle train.
Thousands of migrants have been evading riot police as they try to stow away on lorries bound for Britain on Eurostar trains.
Calais is only one focus of the refugee crisis spanning Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and north Africa in the wake of Nato-backed civil wars in Libya and Syria.
“In Calais, it’s a human drama which is taking place every day,” said former minister for labour, employment and health Xavier Bertrand, who is a candidate in Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie regional elections.
The British government has agreed an extra £7 million of funding for measures to improve security at Calais and the entrance to the Channel Tunnel.
In a letter leaked to the press dated July 23, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve accused Eurotunnel president Jacques Gounon of not doing enough in light of the “worsening situation” in Calais.
“In my analysis, Eurotunnel Group, which has jurisdiction of the security, hasn’t made enough effort in light and proportion to the worsening situation,” said Mr Cazeneuve.
