Maria Duarte reviews Good Kill (15)

Directed by Andrew Niccol 3/5

GOOD KILL explores the ethics of drone warfare in this gripping thriller, in which Ethan Hawke plays a fighter pilot turned drone operative.

He is starting to question his job killing supposed terrorists in Afghanistan via remote control from Las Vegas.

After spending hours observing Afghans in real time he goes home frustrated to his wife (January Jones) and kids in the suburbs.

Written and directed by Andrew Niccol this compelling drama questions the morality and efficacy of the CIA’s covert drone war while looking at the toll it takes on the drone pilots who spend hours observing a screen monitor.

It also deals with the issue of how, by killing civilians in the collateral damage such attacks inflict, the Taliban and al-Qaida are being handed the ideal recruiting tool.

A perfect companion piece to Tonje Hessen Schei’s Drone documentary.
