Ender's Game (12A)
Directed by Gavin Hood
3 Stars
Based on Orson Scott Card's SF novel, Ender's Game is an adventure story which will appeal to kids into computer space games.
In it, the Formics -a hostile alien race - has attacked Earth and the only hope for global survival is an exceptional new generation of young fighters, schooled in a futuristic learning environment - a mixture of computer games, quantum optics and astrophysics.
Gifted child geniuses, they're led by Ender Wiggins (Asa Butterfield) who's gifted with exceptional intelligence, knowledge and empathy.
Participating in a final war "game" against the enemy, they confront the question whether war is the best strategy for achieving peace in a film whose visual style owes much to computer gaming.
It's very much in the tradition of films like Star Trek, Oblivion and The Matrix and none the worse for that.
