Spurs downed but Poch stays calm

Tottenham 0-1 Atletico

Mauricio Pochettino was pleased with his young Tottenham side yesterday, despite losing 2-1 to Atletico Madrid in a pre-season friendly.

Atletico defender Diego Godin scored the only goal of the game, as Spurs fielded a young starting XI that included new signings Vincent Wanyama and Vincent Janssen.

However, the Spurs boss remained positive and felt had it not been for Atletico keeper Jan Oblak, they may have taken more from the game.

Pochettino said: “It was a fantastic performance and a great experience for us. I am very happy with this young team.

“Their goalkeeper was man of the match which says a lot. We finished the game with nine players who have come through the academy — [which is] great.”

One of the youngsters who started for Spurs was Harry Winks, who was pleased with his performance and thanked Wanyama for guiding him through the game.

“I thought we played very well,” said Winks. “I really enjoyed it and I want to prove that I can hold my own.

“Wanyama is a great guy — he really helps me. It’s like having a big brother alongside me in midfield.”
