Dilma Rousseff defends corruption-fighting record before election

President Dilma Rousseff reminded voters of her role in combating corruption on Thursday following concerted attacks on her record by right-wing opponents.

“No government has combated corruption more than mine,” she declared, highlighting her personal efforts pressing federal police to investigate cases.

“I never swept anything under the rug. If these cases of corruption are being discovered today it’s because we combated corruption.”

Her opponents, Marina Silva and Aecio Neves, share a common goal of preventing Ms Rousseff from winning outright victory in tomorrow’s presidential first round.

“Corruption is a very grave situation. They’ve not taken measures to cut it off at the root,” said Ms Silva.

President Rousseff countered by saying that she has repeatedly pursued corruption in government, including forcing out her own ministers.
