'Peace scarf' to span 7 miles between nuke factories

A SEVEN-MILE “peace scarf” will be stretched between Britain’s two nuclear bomb factories tomorrow in protest at government plans to spend £100 billion replacing the Trident nuclear missile system.

More than 5,000 people from communities across Britain and beyond — including Africa, the Middle East, and South America — contributed to the scarf, which was started by the Wool Against Weapons campaign.

Sections of the scarf have been displayed at landmarks including the Angel of the North and Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

The sections will be joined together tomorrow and stretched between Atomic Weapons Establishment facilities at Aldermaston and Burghfield, Berkshire.

The scarf will later be turned into blankets and sent to areas of humanitarian need.

“People are fed up with the government saying there’s not enough money for vital public services while waving through the purchase of a £100bn cold war weapons system,” said Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament general secretary Kate Hudson.
