Manchester: City camp homeless protesters due in court

HOMELESS people who erected a protest camp in Manchester are due in court today for an eviction hearing.

The camp was established outside Manchester town hall last Wednesday after around 200 people demonstrated, accusing the city council of not doing enough to help homeless people.

Around 30 people, most of them homeless, pitched tents in Albert Square.

This morning they will stage a protest with banners at Manchester magistrates’ court where they have been called to appear.

Protester Adam Whelan said: “We plan to drum up support before the court hearing.

“They have summoned the camp to the court as ‘person or persons unknown.’

We’ve been issued with an eviction notice and will be on court on Monday.

“We are still at the camp.”

Manchester Council is seeking a court order to evict the protesters and shut down the camp.
