Balcombe loses frack challenge

Environment: Anti-fracking campaigners lost a High Court bid yesterday to block planning consent for work related to further oil and gas exploration in their village.

The Frack Free Balcombe Residents Association had asked Mr Justice Gilbart, sitting in London, to quash the permission granted by West Sussex County Council to energy firm Cuadrilla.

Britain’s hotspots of debt revealed

Economy: Britain’s biggest “debt hotspots” have been revealed with residents seeking advice for falling behind on “priority” bills such as council tax and rent, Citizens Advice revealed yesterday.

The charity — which has helped almost half a million people with debt over the last year — analysed the requests for debt help that it received across England and Wales between July and September.

Blair: Democratic change too slow

Politics: Tony Blair yesterday plugged privatisation as he blamed the failure of democracy for the public’s dim view of Western governments and politicians.

The former new Labour prime minister indicated in a New York Times article that it is democracy’s inability to deliver change quickly enough that has lead to widespread disapproval of the West.
