Bfawu Conference: Zero-hours boycott rejected

BAKERS ruled out a boycott of zero-hours firms yesterday, warning that it would only alienate disenfranchised workers.

A raft of firms including McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Wetherspoons were shamed at bakers’ union BFAWU conference for exploiting people on low wages with no guaranteed hours.

But a delegate working on a zero-hours contract warned that a boycott would “isolate” those who need support and make it more difficult to recruit members.

The 20,000-strong BFAWU would not make nearly a big-enough dent in multinational firms’ profits to make a difference, a second delegate said.
Conference agreed that campaigning is key.

“Bad publicity is a far more effective weapon than boycotting,” another delegate added.
