BORIS Johnson’s London housing flagship policy has failed miserably as it will take him “over 100 years” to fulfil promises, Assembly members mocked yesterday.
The Mayor’s London Rental Standard was intended to have 100,000 private landlords signed up by May 2016, but a year after its launch barely more than 14,000 have got on board.
According to Labour’s London Assembly housing spokesman Tom Copley, it would take another 103 years for Mr Johnson’s target to be hit.
“Boris Johnson’s abysmal record on housing is epitomised by the fact that with less than a year to go he has signed up just 14 per cent of the 100,000 landlords he promised,” said Mr Copley.
“That’s more than embarrassing — it’s a scandal.”
The scheme sets minimum standards for landlords, as well as establishing voluntary landlord accreditation systems.
“Londoners need the peace of mind and security of longer tenancy agreements, caps on rent increases and an end to no-fault evictions,” Mr Copley said.
“Instead Boris Johnson’s soft-touch and self-regulatory approach is leaving private renters with little protection from bad landlords.”
