Crossrail union reps ‘told they’d be mown down’

CONSTRUCTION union organisers have been harassed, intimidated and even threatened with being run down by lorries at the Crossrail project in London, it was revealed yesterday.

Ucatt has been attempting to recruit workers on the £13 billion Costain ATC project.

The union said workers had reported “a whole raft of issues” including not being paid properly, inadequate canteens and a two-mile walk to the toilet.

But organisers have “have suffered harassment and intimidation by Costain ATC security and employees including the videoing of Ucatt officials outside the sites and delivery drivers threatening to ‘mow them down’,” said the union.

Ucatt London regional secretary Jerry Swain said: “When our officials raise real and serious issues with a contractor working on a massive public-funded project, we don’t expect to be videoed in the street or threatened to be mown down by lorries.”

But despite the hostility, the union reported a victory yesterday, forcing Costain to drop a fingerprint identity system that was “scamming” workers out of wages.

Costain could not be contacted for comment.
