Domestic workers demand visa changes

Migrant domestic workers will be marking World Human Rights Day today by rallying outside Parliament against government changes to their visas.

They argue that under the Con-Dems’ tied domestic worker visa, introduced in April 2012, those entering Britain to work are effectively trapped with that employer and “have become modern-day slaves.”

Unite assistant general secretary Diana Holland said: “Migrant domestic workers’ rights are human rights and justice for these workers cannot be swept under the carpet by this government. While most of us will enjoy the festive period, many of these workers will not be allowed to phone family or friends at Christmas, let alone be able to take any time off.”

The rally will assemble at Old Palace Yard in Westminster from 10.30am on Wednesday December 10.
