Belgrade capitulates to US anti-Russia gas plan

SERBIAN PM Aleksandar Vucic said yesterday that his country would bow to US pressure and buy gas from Azerbaijan instead of Russia.

In an apparent major policy shift, he said that Serbia would favour the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline bringing gas from the Caspian Sea to Italy over Russia’s Turkish Stream route.

He said: “Regarding energy safety, energy security, we are ready to diversify the sources of gas for Serbia, which is very important for our American friends as well.”

Belgrade had previously expressed interest in the Turkish Stream.

The US has been pressing Balkan states to buy Azeri gas as part of its economic war against Russia, accusing Moscow of using gas as a tool to increase its political influence.

Albanian separatist violence and anti-government protests have flared in recent weeks in neighbouring Macedonia, whose government favours the Turkish Stream and opposes EU sanctions against Russia.
