EDL thugs swarm Yorkshire town

TWO hundred racist English Defence League thugs descended on Batley in West Yorkshire on Saturday.

But local people countered with a simultaneous multicultural celebration organised by Huddersfield Unite Against Fascism and Huddersfield Trades Union Council under the name We Are Batley.

Police were out in force to contain the EDL and said that 700 officers from Yorkshire and Humberside had been mobilised.

Huddersfield TUC’s Bob Stoker said the multicultural event “united people from all walks of life to show the fascist EDL is not welcome in Batley.”

Speakers included Batley Labour MP Mike Wood, Bishop of Wakefield Tony Robinson and local councillors and trade unionists including members bakers’ union members from Batley’s Fox’s biscuits factory.

“It was an excellent show of unity by the community to show the EDL that their violence, racism and attempts to divide the community are not welcome in Batley,” said Mr Stoker.
