Police and demonstrators clashed in Zambian capital Lusaka today in protests against acting president Guy Scott's dismissal of ruling Patriotic Front secretary general Edgar Lungu.
Mr Scott stepped into the presidential breach last week following the death of President Michael Sata.
The unrest began on Monday night in several areas of the capital, including the University of Zambia and a government building designated as a place for Mr Sata's mourners to gather.
Protesters descended on the building, Belvedere Lodge, with stones, machetes and other weapons, while police fired tear gas to disperse them.
Mr Lungu, who remains defence and justice minister, claimed that his dismissal was illegal.
He accused Mr Scott, who is of Scottish descent, of "insulting our culture."
Under the constitution, Zambia must hold a presidential election within 90 days of a president's death.
Mr Lungu, who was acting president just before Mr Sata died has been regarded as a potential candidate.
