TWENTY people were injured in Hong Kong in clashes between protesters and police early this morning.
Demonstrators reportedly donned helmets and goggles before making a charge to push through police barriers and seize a major road junction.
Police officers manning the barricade used truncheons and pepper spray to stem the surge.
The protesters’ attempt to block off more roads — a tactic which has brought them into conflict with residents, motorists and businesses — comes shortly before talks with Hong Kong government chief executive Leung Chun-ying.
Mr Leung is due to discuss electoral reforms with protest leaders live on TV on Tuesday night.
Under the government’s plans, universal suffrage will be introduced in 2017. The protesters’ core demand is that candidates should not be vetted by any supervisory body.
However, scrapping the proposals could leave Hong Kong stuck with the existing electoral system, which is dominated by businesses and other Establishment groups.
