Stars rally to BBC’s side against Tory meddling

CELEBRITIES have united in sticking-up for the BBC ahead of the release of today’s government green paper setting out reforms for the broadcaster.

Actor Daniel Craig, his 007 colleague Dame Judi Dench, writer JK Rowling and veteran host David Attenborough signed the open letter sent to Downing Street yesterday.

The green paper is expected to propose scrapping the Beeb’s 24-hour news channel, scaling back the website and ditching entertainment shows such as The Voice.

It would also debate the future of the licence fee.

Stars including comedian Miranda Hart and presenter Chris Evans signed their names to the letter, saying the BBC’s funding should be safeguarded as it is “the envy of the world.”

The missive added that “a diminished BBC would simply mean a diminished Britain” and that it is “overwhelmingly a creative force for good.”

BBC director-general Tony Hall said: “I have real difficulty with the idea of artificial restrictions on creativity — after all, the last time politicians tried to be creative we ended up with the Millennium Dome.”
