Deregulation would lead to fare free for all – RMT

DEREGULATING rail fares would lead to an “all-out free for all,” unions warned last night in response to a right-wing think tank’s astonishing claim that the step would lead to lower ticket prices.

The Institute of Economic Affairs said the “harmful effects” of regulation had been worsened by the pegging of rail fares to the rate of inflation — saying that industry costs could rise at a faster rate.

But RMT general secretary Mick Cash branded the plan “pure and utter nonsense,” saying companies would simply increase fares on popular routes.

He said that taking rail into public ownership was the only way to ensure proper investment in staffing and capacity.
