TURKISH glass workers union Kristal-Is lodged an official complaint against its government with the International Labour Organisation on Thursday.
The union alleged violation of freedom of association, the right to collective bargaining and the right to strike.
The government issued a decree on June 27 suspending a major strike in the glass industry for 60 days on the grounds that it constituted a risk to “public health and national security.”
The union holds that it was a breach of ILO Conventions 87 and 98 on freedom of association and right to organise and collective bargaining.
The union alleges that Turkey uses the regressive law routinely to stifle workers’ right to strike.
IndustriALL Global Union general secretary Jyrki Raina wrote to Prime Minister Recep Erdogan:
“The decree constitutes a clear attack on the right to strike, which is guaranteed by conventions which have been ratified by the Turkish government.”
