Five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe is being treated in hospital after contracting an infection following shoulder surgery.
However, reports that the 31-year-old Australian is in intensive care and may lose the use of his left arm have been played down.
Thorpe has been suffering with a shoulder injury for some time and underwent surgery at the start of the year. He was then admitted to hospital in February following a fall and subsequently sought treatment for depression at a rehabilitation centre.
He has since undergone further operations, but reports yesterday said he has since contracted a serious infection which could end his swimming career.
A spokesman confirmed the swimmer was being treated with antibiotics but insisted Thorpe was in “good health” and everything else was “purely speculation.”
They said: “Ian has contracted two separate infections, both of which are being treated with antibiotics. He is not in ICU.”
