Myanmar: Attacks on Rohingyas spark fury in Jakarta

ACTIVISTS protested yesterday outside Myanmar’s embassy in Indonesia against the treatment of the Rohingya minority.

Demonstrators in Jakarta carried photos of Myanma Buddhist monk Ashin Wirathu, who is alleged to have incited attacks on Rohingya Muslims in his homeland.

Thousands of Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants have been trafficked into Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand in recent weeks, with many abandoned in mountainside camps and on overcrowded boats at sea.

But in Myanmar’s former capital Yangon, several hundred people, led by about 30 Buddhist monks, demonstrated against attempts to blame the country for the crisis.

“The boat people are not from Myanmar,” one banner carried by the demonstrators said. Another read: “The United Nations and the international media are making up stories!”

“This is not Myanmar’s problem, this is a global issue now,” said protester Thuda Nanda, a Buddhist monk. “These boat people have made up the name ‘Rohingya.’ They are pretending to be refugees so they can find a way to come to Myanmar. We cannot accept them.”
