DAVID CAMERON took the rare step yesterday of inviting acting Labour leader Harriet Harman to attend a national security meeting to consider the threat posed by Islamic State (Isis).
The National Security Council meeting, expected to take place tomorrow, comes as the government attempts to build a consensus in favour of extending the RAF’s bombing of Iraq to include strikes against Isis targets in Syria.
It will be the first time a Labour leader has been invited to attend the top-level meeting since 2013.
Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn reiterated his opposition to any extension of the air campaign to Syria.
He warned Sky News that a bombing campaign would not achieve its intended results and if ground troops were sent in there would be a repeat of the “horrors” of Iraq.
“I think we have to determine very carefully where Isis came from, where they get their money from, where they get their arms from and what brought them about.”
