Sweden’s centre-right opposition offered yesterday to strike a deal on parliamentary procedures to prevent the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) from exercising a veto.
Sweden was plunged into political chaos last week when SD blocked the Social Democrat minority government’s budget, forcing Prime Minister Stefan Lofven to call an election.
SD also threatened to veto finance Bills put forward by any minority government unless it tightened the screw on immigration policies.
“We are therefore ready to make a deal across the political divide … to make it possible for … a minority government to function,” said the Moderates, Centre, Christian Democrat and Liberal parties.
SD has had a rapid rise in popularity, only taking its first seats in parliament in 2010. The party doubled its vote in September’s election, gathering 13 per cent support and 49 parliamentary seats.
It is now Sweden’s third largest, behind the Social Democrats and Moderates.
