I don’t understand the latest England squad

But KADEEM SIMMONDS isn’t talking about Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 23-man squad, instead turning his focus on Mark Sampson’s team for the Serbia double header

International squad announcements have caused plenty of debates among football supporters and journalists over the past few months.

While the news of Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad will dominate the pages of today’s papers, should he have taken four centrebacks or how could he leave out Danny Drinkwater but take Jordan Henderson — I was still trying to get my head around Mark Sampson’s selection for the up-and-coming two Euro 2017 qualifiers against Serbia, starting at Wycombe this weekend.

When Sampson named his squad, a few journalists voiced their opinion which is normal.

One leading men’s football reporter commented that he was surprised to see Chelsea’s Eni Aluko omitted from the squad. For anyone who has watched her recently, it should come as no surprise at all.

I wrote recently about people being fans of women’s football in spirit and that it was easier to say you watch the Women’s Super League then to actually attend a game in person or watch one on BT Sport.

Had this journalist seen Aluko in the FA Cup final or the following match against Man City, he would have noticed that she is not in form and the bigger surprise was not seeing Danielle Carter’s name on the squad list — frankly inexcusable.

Carter was truly sensational at Wembley, skipping past Hannah Blundell for fun and scoring one of the best goals I have ever seen live.

Aluko may have played better last week against Sunderland but by then it was too late, the squad had been announced and she missed her chance to add to her 90 caps.

Carter only has one cap to her name but scored a hat-trick in her only appearance for the national side.

I would have though a player who scores a hat-trick on their debut deserves a second chance, even if it is to see if that performance was a fluke.

Carter should have added to her only cap, which came last September, and I do think she must be on the cusp of the squad and is missing out because Sampson believes he has better options.

Though I wholeheartedly disagree, the England boss has been scouting these players for months or even years and clearly has a plan for these next two games

Another player who I had expected to see was Claire Rafferty.

The longest serving player at Chelsea, how she has only nine caps is beyond belief.

She has been ever-present for the Blues and is part of one of, if not the, best women’s team in the country.

She excelled in Canada last year and would have thought that would have cemented her place in the squad.

Maybe she missed out because she has been in-and-out of the squad, though the Chelsea left back should have started against Arsenal in the cup final and would have defended better against Carter when she switched flanks, no offence to Ana Borges.

Rafferty did play 90 minutes a few days later against Manchester City and put in an assured performance, but Demi Stokes stole the show and I can see why 24-year-old got the nod this time around.

Stokes took her goal superbly and gets up and down the flank better than Rafferty does at this moment.

Emma Hayes started with Borges over the more experienced Rafferty at Wembley for her attacking potential and it’s easy to see why Sampson is going with a similar approach for England.

Rafferty is the more conservative option and if the England boss wants to take the game to Serbia, starting Stokes allows him to do that.

With that being said, I do believe Gemma Davison should feature more under Sampson and cannot believe she only has five caps to her name at 29.

I’ve never seen a game in which the Chelsea winger hasn’t thrived, often tormenting her full back with ease, and has the talent and skill to be an important player for the national side.

Given that both Hope Powell and Sampson have overlooked her repeadedly since her first cap in 2009, it must mean that she plays better at club level than international.

I would love to see a front three of Carter, Davison and Fran Kirby. They would cause havoc against opposing defences if unleashed at the same time.

That is no disrespect to the players who have made the squad — Karen Carney has been exceptional for both club and country and deserves her place in the squad.

The same can be said of Jodie Taylor, as well as Rachel Daly, 24, and Nikita Parris, 22, who have caught the eye of Sampson recently.

It is rare for everyone to agree with a manager’s squad selection and I am sure had Carter and Rafferty been called up, other pundits would be asking why Stokes and Daly missed out, such is the way these things work.

Daly has impressed since making her Houston Dash debut this season, leading the team with three assists and a goal scored on her debut.

Sampson wants to get a closer look at her around the England set-up and how she adapts to her new surroundings.

However, I do think it is harsh to leave out Carter given the month she has had and, if you are looking for stars for the future, the Arsenal forward has to be considered.
