London: Cyclists protest at eighth traffic death

LONDON cyclists brought traffic to a standstill on Monday evening to protest at the death of newly wed Ying Tao, who was killed by a tipper-truck last week.

City accountant Ms Tao was the eighth cyclist to die on the capital’s roads this year and the seventh in an incident involving a lorry.

Donnachadh McCarthy of the campaigning group Stop Killing Cyclists demanded a ban on motor traffic from the “murderous” Bank junction and called on Mayor Boris Johnson to spend 10 per cent of London’s transport budget on cycle infrastructure.

Green Party mayoral hopeful Caroline Russell told the Star that road deaths have become normalised.

“Five people a day are dying on Britain’s roads. I’m amazed that protests like this are not happening everywhere,” she said.

Several passing pedestrians joined the vigil and lay down on the road with hundreds of cyclists to mark Ms Tao’s death.
