Portsmouth port staff announce strike

Four-day walk-out on the cards after company reneges on staffing levels and leave agreements

Quayside workers in Portsmouth will strike for four days over staffing levels and leave arrangements, it was announced yesterday.

The Unite members will strike from 3pm on Sunday at a Portsmouth City Council-owned port.

Unite's city council convenor Richard White said: "Management at the port have clearly reneged on agreements made with staff last year that detailed the levels of staff working on the quayside.

"It has also proceeded to impose a leave system without consultation that makes it increasingly difficult for our members to take a break away from their physically demanding jobs."

Mechanical fitters at the port are also being balloted on industrial action over the imposition of a new call-out system for weekend cover.

Security workers at the port are to start a two-week overtime ban next Monday over staffing levels.

The port made £463,000 in the last financial year.
