Can Musaddas finally land a major prize?

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend‘s meets

THE outstanding betting race of the day is the 35-runner Betfred Cambridgeshire and I fancy that Musaddas can finally come good and land a major prize for Godolphin at Newmarket (3.50).

This lightly raced individual has only raced on turf on just the seven occasions and had been eye-catchingly progressive before a slightly below-par sixth of 16 behind the classy Chill The Kite at York last time out.

However, that run came only nine days after a cracking effort at the Knavesmire track when he pushed the progressive Birdman to a length and three-quarters and there is little doubt that the following outing simply came to soon for him.

For James Doyle’s mount is quite simply a better horse when fresh and with the drying ground in his favour, his ability to act on the Rowley Mile confirmed by a clear cut win in May and a potentially fair looking draw, I expect a huge run from him at betting odds in the region of 25/1.

Of course in a mammoth field of 35, there are any number of dangers with previous winners Bronze Angel and Educate top of the pile.

The first-named comes here at the top of his form having eased to victory at Doncaster and although 9lbs higher than 12 months ago, he has run well off this mark before.

Educate is the better handicapped of the pair having slid back down to what looks a very fair rating of 102, won this off 104 two years ago, and he showed earlier this season that he retains enough ability to be in the shake up here especially as he has shown such an affinity for this track in the past.

Of the remaining runners, I certainly wouldn’t put you off the likes of the lightly raced Earth Drummer, Man of Harlech or the very nicely weighted Gabrial’s Kaka.

The last-named is now fully 13lbs lower than when starting as low as 17/2 for the Lincoln Handicap way back in March.

It’s a bumper card at Newmarket and earlier on the tough as nails Buratino will be hard to beat in the Middle Park Stakes at 3.10.

The son of Exceed and Excel was brilliant in landing the Coventry Stakes from Air Force Blue at Royal Ascot before finishing third to the same horse in the Phoenix Stakes. He has the progressive Shalaa to worry about most.

And I take Sunflower to cause a shock in the Cheveley Park Stakes at 2.35 from trainer Andrew Balding.

Captain Bob may get the better of Mr Universe in the finale at 5.35, but an even stronger bet could be Fast Shot at a double-figure price in the Haydock 3.20.

Tim Easterby’s charge has plummeted in the weights this season and showed his turn was close when running well in the Ayr Bronze Cup.

I am hoping there will be enough juice in the ground for Totalize in the 5.05 at the Lancashire track, while over at Chester have a second look at both Mutafaakir (2.30) and Apostle at 4.50.
