POLAND’S Foreign Ministry announced today that it had sent a protest note to the Russian ambassador over language used by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin.
The ministry condemned “the brutalisation of language that is outside the norms of diplomacy.”
The Russo-Polish clash started when Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said that he was considering inviting foreign leaders on May 8 to mark the end of war in Europe, to avoid the victory parade in Moscow’s Red Square the next day.
Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna called the idea “interesting,” referring to the 1939 German-Soviet pact.
Mr Karasin said that Mr Schetyna’s remarks could not be taken seriously.
“After this gentleman’s well-known statements about Auschwitz, he is trying to disgrace not only his own name but the diplomatic service of Poland, because trying so clumsily and awkwardly to revise the outcome of World War II and the role of the Soviet Union as the winner indeed looks odious,” he said.
