CHINESE military chiefs called for a return to six-nation denuclearisation talks for the Korean peninsula in Washington yesterday.
They proposed a “dual-track approach” with a peace mechanism in parallel with a “suspension for suspension” to defuse tensions over North Korea’s recent nuclear and missile tests.
The Xinhua news agency said Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi co-chaired the one-day meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defence James Mattis.
The US side pressed Beijing to put more pressure on Pyongyang to disarm and tighten the sanctions screw.
But the Chinese reiterated opposition to the US deployment of its THAAD anti-ballistic missile system in South Korea, which Beijing says is aimed at its own nuclear deterrent.
