UKIP supporters who complained about a docu-drama based on their party were slapped down yesterday by Britain’s broadcasting watchdog, writes Alana MacAskill.
One million viewers tuned into Ukip: The First 100 Days, which depicted the nightmare vision of Britain if Nigel Farage had miraculously won the 2015 general election.
Six thousand viewers complained, including a number of Ukip supporters who deemed the programme misleading, biased and scare-mongering.
But Ofcom announced it would not take action, insisting that the presentation of the party was “not misleading.” A spokesperson said: “The depiction of Ukip policy was closely based on the party’s recent announcements, in particular on immigration and the EU.”
Channel 4 invited Nigel Farage to view the documentary before its release but he refused. He did however accept an earlier opportunity to spend time on a booze-fuelled Gogglebox special on Channel 4.
