Woman dies in ambulance queue

Health: An investigation is underway after a woman died in an 40 minute-long ambulance queue outside a Swansea hospital.

Statistically more than 85 per cent of people arriving at Welsh A&Es are seen within four hours but in certain areas almost one in five have had to wait longer.

The news follows a summer of heated discussions between the unions and Welsh Ambulance Trust. 

A recent consultative ballot saw 41 per cent of Welsh ambulance workers vote in favour of strike action.

 

Jolie good result as cancer tests rise

Health: Breast cancer tests in Britain doubled after actress Angelina Jolie revealed her own preventive mastectomy.

The number of GP referrals for genetic and DNA tests for breast cancer grew by two-and-a-half times between July 2012 and last year.

Researchers said the rise in awareness was welcome as most of the women testing had family histories of breast cancer.

 

Children’s services chief told to quit

Rotherham: The town’s children’s services director Joyce Thacker came under even more pressure to quit yesterday when it was revealed she has been away on sick leave.

Ms Thacker had already been questioned by the Commons home affairs committee, which suggested she left her post. 

Keith Vaz MP said she “should take note of other resignations and follow suit.”
