Sheffield College staff walk out against redundancies

COLLEGE lecturers in Sheffield in South Yorkshire walked out on strike yesterday over staff cuts.

Sheffield College management has declared 13 compulsory redundancies, and plans to downgrade the job status of lecturers, saying it needs to cut costs.

Members of lecturers’ union UCU took strike action on Wednesday last week, June 10, and again yesterday.

Some staff will be on strike today as part of a rolling programme of action, and more strike action will follow on June 22.
Lecturers voted by 86 per cent for strike action.

UCU is calling for redeployment of threatened staff, cuts in senior management costs and for any redundancies to be voluntary.

The union also wants a freeze on the proposed redundancies.

Regional UCU official Julie Kelley said: “We warned last week that unless the college was prepared to negotiate seriously with us to try and find a solution to the current impasse over job losses and plans to downgrade the role of the lecturer, then more strike action was on the cards.”
