Edward Snowden gets further 3 years' residency in Russia

US WHISTLEBLOWER Edward Snowden was granted permission today to stay in Russia for three more years.

The former intelligence contractor had been granted a year’s temporary asylum, but that ran out on August 1.

His lawyer Anatoly Kucherena said that Mr Snowden had been granted residency for three more years, but had not been granted political asylum.

Full asylum status would allow him to stay in Russia permanently.

Mr Kucherena said his client was working in information technology and that his holding a job was a key consideration in extending his residency.

He also said Mr Snowden was being safeguarded by a private security service.

Mr Snowden was stranded in a Moscow airport last year en route from Hong Kong to Cuba, shortly after he released documentation about the National Security Agency’s surveillance programmes.

The US has charged him with theft of government property and with communicating classified information.
