Sport in Brief: 8/7/2014

FOOTBALL: Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic has resigned following the Fennec Foxes’ successful World Cup campaign.

The Bosnian saw Algeria into the knockout stages for the first time in their history in Brazil before an extra-time defeat to Germany in the last 16.

He announced his departure in a statement which read: “I am proud of my record after serving out my contract with the FAF.”

RUGBY: Leigh have agreed a two-year deal with former Wakefield and Bradford half-back Ben Jeffries.

The 33-year-old returned to Australia at the end of 2012 to play part-time rugby and work in the mines but will resurrect his full-time career with the runaway Championship leaders in December.

Leigh head of rugby Derek Beaumont said: “I’m pleased we’ve managed to secure Ben’s services ahead of some fierce competition.”

FOOTBALL: Former Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole arrived in Italy yesterday to complete his free transfer to Roma.

The 33-year-old left-back is a free agent following his release by the Blues earlier this summer and has decided to continue his career with the Serie A runners-up.

Cole flew to the Italian capital, with Roma posting a photo on their official Twitter feed, with the message: “Welcome to Rome, Ashley.”

RUGBY: A Welsh rugby player has been suspended from all sport for three years following an anti-doping violation.

Christopher Edwards, 29, committed two violations for the possession and use of anabolic steroids and is banned from all competition until April 27 2017.

Information regarding the offence was provided by a member of the public and Edwards’s failure to promptly admit wrong-doing led to an aggravated suspension.
