Mair’s murder trial hears tape of desperate 999 call

JO COX murder eyewitness Darren Playford dialled 999 as the killing took place and told the operator: “There’s hell on, it’s chaos,” the Old Bailey heard yesterday.

Jurors heard a recording of the call as the trial of Ms Cox’s suspected killer Thomas Mair continued.

Mr Playford urged emergency services to hurry after Mr Mair allegedly shot and stabbed the 41-year-old Labour MP outside her surgery in Birstall, near Leeds, on June 16.

Another witness, David Honeybell, who had gone to see Ms Cox before her surgery, told yesterday’s court session that Mr Mair had “just walked away with not a care in the world.”

Mr Mair reportedly shouted: “Put Britain first,” in between firing shots at the Batley and Spen MP.

On Wednesday, the trial heard that Ms Cox had told two of her staff: “Get away, you two, let him hurt me.”

The trial continues.
