Shrewsbury Pickets papers secrecy ‘unjustified’ – Nandy

LABOUR shadow minister Lisa Nandy said yesterday that the government had “no justification” for keeping Shrewsbury Pickets papers secret, writes Luke James.

Ministers have refused to release files relating to the arrest of 24 builders (pictured) during the famous 1972 strike — despite MPs voting for them to do so last year.

Tory Oliver Letwin told Cabinet ministers that the Shrewsbury convictions were being reviewed and only a fraction of documents have been “kept back on security grounds.”

Blaydon Labour MP Dave Anderson warned the continuing cover-up will “see innocent men going to their graves as convicted criminals.”

But Mr Letwin claimed: “There is no question of any injustice of the kind he describes occurring as a result of the lack of those papers being present.”

Ms Nandy added: “The minister may refuse to act, but a Labour government will act. We will release those papers with the urgency that the situation demands.

“Justice delayed is justice denied.”
