BBC staff to strike on Commonwealth Games opening day

BBC staff are to strike over pay on the day the Commonwealth Games open in Glasgow, their unions confirmed yesterday.

Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), broadcasting union Bectu and general union Unite will walk out for 24 hours on Wednesday July 23.

NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet called for “radical reform” of the BBC — including a pay cap of £150,000 a year for executives.

“When it comes to executive perks, lavish salaries for managers and jobs for their mates, the BBC executive is the board that likes to say Yes,” she said.

“When it comes to paying journalists and programme makers who deliver the content that makes the BBC the envy of the world, the BBC has tried to peddle the line that a below-inflation deal is the only way of keeping their political and corporate enemies at bay. It does not wash.”
