CELTIC’S majority shareholder Dermot Desmond predicted the creation of a British league yesterday due to changes in broadcasting technlogy.
For years, suggestions of Celtic and Rangers plying their trade in the Premier League have been shot down and put on the back burner.
The Premier League makes £5.1 billion from their recent television deal while the Scottish league’s current deal is worth just £15 million.
But Desmond believes that in the next decade teams will wield more power and make the move south of the border.
The Irishman said: “Our concentration is to win the Scottish Premier League. As far as developing other leagues, I think technology is going to change and evolve how football is sold in the future.
“Before it was a monopoly with either terrestrial TV or satellite TV, now everybody has the ability to broadcast their results and performances.
“In the future I think there will be different types of negotiations between teams and leagues that will evolve into more competitive leagues in the British Isles.
“I’m taking a 10-year view, what we see in the English Premier League today I don’t think will be around in 10 years’ time, I think there will be a British Premier League.
“In Italy and in Spain you have the bigger clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid who negotiate their own football contracts because they are more advantageous to them.
“I think that will happen in Britain with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal and then I think they will institute a change in the structure of the league.”
Celtic boss Ronn Deila would relish the chance of pitting his team against the likes of United and Chelsea and feels that his side should have the opportunity to do so.
He said: “I think that (British league) could be possible. But it is not easy to do things very quickly in Britain.
“It takes time but Celtic is a team that should have the opportunity to play in the best league.
“Hopefully in the end we can get into the Premiership or a league that is more a British thing.”
Uefa entertained the idea last year but admitted that nothing would happen in the near future.
General secretary Gianni Infantino said at the time: “I have only heard of this now and there has been no change in the position of Uefa. As matters stand today, this is not a possibility.”
