Fans’ groups back nationwide boycott of Sun

FOOTBALL fans across England and Wales have called for a boycott of The Sun newspaper.

Delegates at the FSF’s annual meeting unanimously backed a motion urging all fan groups to lobby their clubs and local retailers to stop selling the Murdoch hate rag.

The motion recounted the paper’s vile lies about Liverpool fans desperately trying to escape the deadly crush at Hillsborough in Sheffield in 1989.

It applauded the actions of the Total Eclipse of the Sun group on Merseyside to rid their community of the rag, and warned that while Liverpool supporters were targeted that day “it could have been any set of fans.”

The passing of the motion — drawn up by the Spirit of Shankly Liverpool supporters union — means that the FSF will formally request that all its affiliated supporters groups and trusts demand all local retailers and newsagents pull The Sun from their shelves.

Delegates also voted to put pressure on the Football Association and English Football League (EFL) to overhaul the current lax ownership rules and bring in a licensing system for clubs.

In particular they pointed to “negligent, incompetent or irresponsible” behaviour by owners at clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient.

The FSF motion said that licences should require a thorough fit and proper person test that scrutinises owners’ and directors’ financial dealings.

It would also force them to support efforts to list grounds as assets of community value — potentially stopping them from being flogged off by bad bosses in dodgy deals.

Other motions that passed urged further governance reform and a look at the role of agents in the game.
