Savvy Labour member set for £5k windfall

ONE Labour member is set to win big twice if Jeremy Corbyn becomes the party’s next leader.

Charley Allan, from north London, rushed to his local bookies minutes after the left candidate secured a place on the ballot paper in June.

The Islington North MP was considered rank outsider at 100/1, but that didn’t stop Mr Allan backing him with £40 worth of bets.

Now the self-confessed “optimist” could be set to scoop £4,000 after Mr Corbyn was this week made the bookies’ favourite.

“I did a bit of political betting at the general election, but I can only bet on things I actually want to happen,” he told the Star. “I couldn’t bet on the Tories winning or anything like that. I just couldn’t enjoy those winnings. So fingers crossed I’m going to make up my losses.”

Mr Allan put £5 down for himself, £5 for his wife and each of his two children and £10 each for his mum and his sister.

The family have plans to pay for a winter break with the winnings if Mr Corbyn becomes leader on September 12.

But Mr Allan, a former Morning Star journalist, has already promised his share to the treasurer of his local Labour branch in Crouch End. He said: “I thought that would be the comradely thing to do. It’s a small price to pay for having Jeremy as leader.”

Asked if he thought Mr Corbyn could shock the political Establishment, he added: “I’m absolutely convinced he can win the leadership and then the general election in 2020.

“All you need is someone to clearly articulate socialist principles and Jeremy is that person.”
