Aslef retains political fund

TRAIN drivers have voted overwhelmingly to retain their union’s political fund, the Aslef union revealed yesterday.

In a ballot which has to be held every 10 years, members of Aslef backed the fund by four to one.

General secretary Mick Whelan said: “I’m delighted that we have maintained our right to play the fullest part in our democratic society. Not to have had a political fund would have limited what we can do to defend our members’ interests.”

Mr Whelan stressed that the money — about 2.5 per cent of members’ subscriptions — was not a fund for the Labour Party but was used to campaign for more investment in passenger and rail freight and on defending pensions and jobs.

He added: “It is another weapon in our armoury as Aslef campaigns against rail privatisation, for more freight on rail and broader campaigns against the privatisation of public services, budget cuts, austerity measures and attacks on employment rights.”
